Sleep
apnea is a severe sleeping disorder characterised by interruption in
a person’s breathing during sleep. A person suffering from an
untreated condition of sleep apnea may stop breathing many times
during sleep, resulting in oxygen deficiency in brain and other parts
of the body.
Types
of sleep apnea
Sleepapnea can be distinguished into two parts, as follows: -
- Obstructive sleep apnea – OSA is the most common type of sleep apnea and occurs due to the collapse of soft tissues in throat, which obstructs the airway.
- Central sleep apnea – caused due to respiratory control centre instability, it occurs when due to failure of brain to incite the muscles to breathe.
Sleep
apnea can occur in any one irrespective of age or sex. However the
risk factors are more in people over the age suffering from
overweight or obesity issues. They also occur more in men. The
effects of sleep apnea are as follows: -
- Increased chance of stroke
- High blood pressure and diabetes
- Recurrent headaches
- Probability for heart attack, heart failure and so on
- Worsening of ADHD
Symptoms
of sleep apnea
The
common symptom associated with sleep apnea is loud snoring or waking
up with a gasping or choking sensation. Other symptoms include
insomnia or disturbed sleep, waking up with dry or sore throat,
persistent headaches and mood swings.
Treatment
for sleep apnea
Sleep
apnea treatment is followed after a diagnosis test or sleep study
conducted with the help of various procedures. Once the condition is
ascertained, sleep apnea can be treated with procedure ranging from
lifestyle and sleep position changes to CPAP therapy. In cases where
the condition is very severe, surgical procedures are adopted.
Lifestyle
changes include weight loss treatments, changing habits that
stimulate the disorder and changing the positions of sleep. The CPAP
therapy is growing popular because of its effectiveness to treat the
condition. It includes a mask attached to a machine which helps in
preventing the collapse of airway while sleeping.
Surgical
procedures help in correcting the physical factors like tonsils,
mandibular or nasal irregularities that stimulate the condition.
B& C Technologies are leading distributors of healthcare products
including CPAP devices which help in effective treatment of sleep
apnea.
